Copy Editor / Page Designer

Work in our newsroom at the Jefferson City News Tribune in Jefferson City, Missouri. This is an in-person job (not remote). If you pay attention to detail and care about quality journalism, you can make an impact here. We’re the third-most-read newspaper in Missouri and focus on delivering accurate, engaging news to our community. In this role, you’ll make sure content is clear, accurate, and visually appealing while meeting Tribune standards. You’ll also work with the newsroom team to prepare stories for both print and digital platforms.
Key Responsibilities • Prepare written materials and page layouts for publication. • Edit copy for grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, style, clarity, and accuracy. • Rewrite or modify stories, headlines, captions, and cut lines to meet News Tribune editorial standards. • Read page proofs, detect errors, and indicate corrections prior to publication. • Verify facts, dates, names, and statistics using standard reference sources. • Confer with reporters and editors to clarify information and resolve copy issues. • Examine copy for potential libel concerns. • Select, crop, and prepare photographs and illustrative materials as needed. • Assist with other newsroom duties as assigned and support daily production deadlines.
Qualifi cations • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, History, or a related liberal arts fi eld preferred. • Strong command of English, including grammar and style. • Skilled in creative headline writing. • Knowledge of news values and editorial judgment. • Profi ciency in InDesign or similar publishing software. • Familiarity with Photoshop preferred. • Knowledge of editing symbols and layout procedures. • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines. • Strong written and oral communication skills. • Ability to supervise when required and communicate workfl ow. • Dependable transportation, fl exible hours required.
