MAINTENANCE WORKER II – STREET/TRAFFIC

SUMMARY: Assists in the maintenance of traffic signs, road markings, and parking meters for the City. Provides as needed assistance to street department to construct, maintain, repair, and treat city road and stormwater infrastructure while coaching subordinates and communicating well with all.

This position performs safety sensitive functions and therefore is subject to Random drug testing.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have a valid Missouri driver’s license and the ability to obtain CDL (Class B) license.
  • Must have completed the Missouri Local Technical Assistance (MO-LTAP) Scholars Level I Program or similar education or certification programs or classes or have overriding experience.
  • Ability to operate dump trucks, tractors, and mowers and has a good understanding for the operation of larger equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1) Coverage Activities

A. Maintains a high level of safety. Generally, all work is performed in the street under hazardous traffic conditions. Therefore, this position is required to understand and perform traffic control functions.

B. Operates a dump truck to haul rock from rock quarries, asphalt from asphalt plants, and plow snow and treat the city roadways day or night during the winter months.

C. Provide as needed help to construct new roadway infrastructure including curb and gutter, sidewalk, ADA ramps, storm sewer mains, storm sewer catch basins, driveway approaches, and pavement preparation.

D. Assists with culvert repairs and replacements, keeps ditches, inlets, and catch basins clean and free of obstacles.

E. Performs snow removal and salt, cinders, and sand distribution, assuring safety, thoroughness and professionalism at all times of the day or night. Comfortable operating, at minimum, two-ton dump trucks with spreader and plow attachments.

F. Performs tree and brush cutting and trimming. This work includes the operation of chainsaws and woodchippers.

G. Maintains an awareness of the operation of a variety of tools and equipment. Operates a variety of tools and equipment, assuring compliance with safety procedures.

H. Maintains "on call" status on assigned schedule; complies with the schedule, assuring for professionalism.

2) Signing, Striping, and Meter Related Activities

A. Perform activities associated with stripping of the roadways, intersections, crosswalks, and curbs assuring the surface has been properly prepared for clear painted markings. Operates the paint striping machine and grinder in the correct and safe manner to provide clear and well aligned markings.

B. Helps maintain the inventory of City traffic signs. Receives requests and takes initiative for replacement of posts and signs. Records related work information in the City’s GIS system.

C. Responds to directives to replace signposts and signs assuring promptness and thoroughness.

D. Maintain signs, roadways, and sidewalks by removing debris and weeds. This includes the operation of various equipment (bucket truck, wood chipping, mowing, weed eating, edging, spraying, pruning, chainsaw equipment).

C. Assists in the maintenance of the City parking meters, assuring that they are operational and have a good appearance. Activities include setting meter posts and emptying and reporting coinage as needed.

D. Assists with minor maintenance projects associated with traffic lights assuring safety and thoroughness.

E. Responds to requests by immediate supervisor in an accurate, complete and timely manner.

F. Deals with the public in a positive manner.

3) Traffic Control Functions

A. Perform traffic control and flagging activities as needed; follows safety rules and regulations on all work zones and flagging sites, including placing signs, barricades, traffic cones and other warning devices.

B. Help monitor traffic patterns throughout the city. Help deploy and program traffic control devices IE: Radar signs, speed bumps, traffic counters etc.

C. Assist with traffic signals maintenance, operations, repairs, and replacements as required for traffic safety. Must be able to work in a bucket truck to work on signal masts, arms, heads, and poles.

D. Assist with gathering and maintaining records from radar, counter systems, and other devices. To help show traffic flow, traffic and speed issues.

4) Sign Shop Functions

A. Help with the physical construction and assembling of signs from computer cut vinyl and wide format full color printouts (include cutting printed graphics using a variety of cutters, applying the product to substrates, laminating, and mounting prints).

B. Learn required computer software. Microsoft Word, excel, Corel Draw, and others as needed.

C. Requires an attention to detail to affectively produce custom signage, stickers, banners, vehicle signs, vehicle decals, door hangars, and large aesthetically pleasing way finding signage for multiple departments including gas, water, electric, sewer, solid waste, parks and recreations, golf course, police, and fire.

Pay: $15.00 - $18.50 per hour
