General Description:

The Human Resources Specialist is responsible for supporting the Director of Human Resources in all facets of human resources including employee benefits, hiring and terminations, employee relations, training, compliance, and employee support.  This position also serves as one of the Deputy Title IX Coordinators.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·        Administer the university’s tuition exchange program.

·        Administer Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA); create and mail appropriate correspondence concerning FMLA as needed.

·        Administer university’s work study and graduate assistant program(s) in cooperation with the Office of Student Financial Services.

·        Prepare letters of appointment for staff and contracts for faculty.

·        Prepare separation paperwork for departing employees.

·        Conduct employee orientations for new staff and faculty.

·        Assist in updating employee handbooks for staff, adjunct faculty, and graduate assistants.

·        Update human resources page on university website; post job openings on website.

·        Enter and maintain employee information in the university database.

·        Enroll new employees in benefits including health, life, dental, and vision insurance.

·        Complete employment verification requests.

·        Run background checks and conduct reference checks on potential employees.

·        Assist with benefit open enrollment, answer basic question, and assist in solving issues.

·        Prepare purchase orders.

·        Serve as backup to the Payroll Manager.

·        Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

· A bachelor's degree is preferred; two years of human resources experience is required.
· Previous university experience is preferred.
· Previous payroll experience preferred.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
· Prior successful work experience in a customer service oriented setting.
· Self-motivated with a desire to learn.
· Ability to work as a team member.
· Proficient in the entire Microsoft Office suite.
· Knowledge of Jenzabar is preferred.
· Ability to work in a fast paced work environment.
· Ability to use discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Typical Physical Demands:

·Ability to climb stairs.
·Ability to crouch, kneel, bend or stand.
·Ability to speak and read English fluently; ASL preferred.
·Ability to hear.
·Ability to use a computer keyboard.
·Effective mobility skills required to move about freely and quickly in office and on campus.
·Must possess a driver’s license and adhere to the WWU vehicle policy.

Work Schedule:

This is a 40-hour per week, non-exempt position with occasional evening or weekend work as needed. Core work hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
