Asst. Golf Course Superintendent

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Assistant Superintendent assists with the day-to-day and year around oversight of the maintenance and agronomic practices of the golf course and adjacent grounds, including but not limited to the clubhouse landscaping and maintenance complex. Winter activities include snow removal (shoveling, snow blowing and plowing as needed).

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Experience, Education, and Training

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. College degree preferred.
  • Registered Pesticide Technician (required upon hire) 
  • Certified Fertilizer Applicator License (required within 6 months)
  • Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License (required within 6 months)
  • Graduation from a two-year associate degree program with major course work in agronomy, turfgrass management, recreation and parks, horticulture or related field, plus two years' experience as an assistant golf course superintendent or other applicable position at a golf course.

Requirements

  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing and submit to periodic drug testing as required by applicable laws.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Subject to working a varied schedule including some evenings, weekends and holidays.

Abilities

  • Knowledge of fiscal record keeping and inventory procedures.
  • Ability to use a personal computer, applicable software and peripheral equipment.
  • Knowledge of methods and practices of golf course maintenance.
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in golf course maintenance.
  • Ability to identify, isolate and initiate repairs to equipment and irrigation systems.
  • Ability to identify and treat turfgrass diseases and pests.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, chemical labels and other technical documents.
  • Ability and skill to operate a variety of golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to obtain necessary certifications.

FUNCTIONS

Essential Duties

  1. Assist management with supervising the foreman, irrigation technician and other employees in the maintenance department.
  2. Assist management with daily work procedures, prepares weekly work schedules, and expedites workflow for the foreman, irrigation staff and other employees in the maintenance department.
  3. Assist with issuing written and oral instructions to maintenance personnel; assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness and conformance to policies and procedures.
  4. Provide essential input to the Superintendent to assist in planning and managing the annual budget and the maintenance recordkeeping.
  5. Studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
  6. Works closely with Superintendent in preparing short-term and long-term agronomic strategies for maintenance of the golf course daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly fertilization, irrigation schedules.
  7. Assist staff when needed with routine tasks (mowing, calibrating and operating pesticide sprayer, routine repairs).
  8. Monitors inventory of all maintenance equipment and the use of the equipment.
  9. Assists with proper application and documentation of all chemicals and fertilizers as outlined in agronomic plan and weekly schedule.
  10. Assists with inventory of all chemicals, fertilizers, shop supplies and course supplies and communicate future needs to Superintendent as appropriate.
  11. Assists management with developing, performing, and documenting safety meetings for the maintenance department.
  12. Assists with monitoring and recording fuel and irrigation usage logs and report appropriately.
  13. Perform related duties as assigned.

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is usually indoors, in a controlled environment, and experiences a moderate noise level in the work environment. 

Physical

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; bend; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop or kneel.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 20 - 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
