General Description:

The Assistant Dean of Students is an essential member of the William Woods University Student Life leadership team. This role oversees key areas of the student experience: residence life, community standards, and commuter student support. The Assistant Dean will also provide leadership to Campus Safety and Security in partnership with the Vice President and Dean. The Assistant Dean serves as a collaborative leader within the University community, helping to facilitate effective partnerships to ensure students a vibrant learning environment.

Residence Life: Administration and operation of residence life. Manages and supervises the overall operations of a broad range of university-owned housing facilities; addresses all aspects of the living environment for on-campus residents, ensuring living facilities are clean, attractive, well-maintained, comfortable, and include safety and health features maintained by systematic operations. Supervise graduate and undergraduate student staff to provide a safe and comfortable living environment for residential students.

Community Standards: Responsible for the day-to-day oversight of community standards operations, student conduct investigation processes, and educational initiatives as directed. Ensures student conduct cases are adjudicated and resolved per established procedures. Assists in the maintenance of student conduct records and the processing of student conduct records requests to internal and external agencies. Coordinates and facilitates the University Hearing Board process.

Commuter Student Support: Provide support and resources to commuter students through the management of three undergraduate Commuter Student Assistants, oversight of the Commuter Student Lounge, and hosting programs and events that support the success and retention of commuter students.

Campus Safety and Security: Along with the Vice President for Student Life, provide oversight of the Safety and Security Coordinator, safety and security operations, and participate actively in partnership with third-party service provider.

Due to the 24-7 nature of on-campus residential housing, the Assistant Dean will be expected to develop, implement, evaluate and participate in an effective, efficient “on-duty” and “on-call” system for Residential Life staff.   The Assistant Dean must also be willing and able to promptly respond to emergency or other crisis situations that occur.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serves as a representative of the University, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and discretion in all interactions with other members of the WWU community and with the public.
  • Oversees the preparation of all on-campus housing for students' arrival & residency; and participates in all registration and orientation activities for students living in on-campus housing. 
  • Fairly and objectively handles and resolves concerns, questions or issues regarding Residential Life and campus housing brought by students and/or parents.  (Provides negotiation, problem identification and problem-solving options and skills for students on matters directly related to on-campus housing.)
  • Recruits, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates residence hall staff to achieve the goals and objectives of the University, Student Life, and Residential Life.
  • Works cooperatively and collaboratively with Facilities personnel to ensure quality service and upkeep of the residence hall.
  • Actively collaborates on developing, implementing, and evaluating educational, social, cultural, and spiritual programming for resident students.
  • Prepares budgets and monitors expenditures for all programs assigned and ensures proper maintenance of records.
  • Facilitates the development, implementation, and evaluation of training and policy/procedures/protocols, manuals, handbooks, etc. pertaining to Residential Life.
  • Effectively and consistently establishes, affirms and enforces standards of conduct appropriate to on-campus living. This includes collaborating in the management of the Student Handbook, Community Standards, and other Residential Life policies.
  • Develops a rapport with students and serves as an advisor and mentor for concerns related to the position.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with other appropriate staff and groups within the campus community.
  • Effectively provides for the orderly and effective management of residential life programs that meet the needs of students and other constituents in a courteous, efficient, and effective manner.
  • Oversee the standards processes and Standards Board for accountability in violations of the Student Handbook and community standards.
  • Participate in Title IX cases in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Effectively and capably handles other job related duties as assigned by the Vice President and Dean of Student Life.
  • Support and enhance Learning Communities within residence halls. Oversee programmatic initiatives for first year learning communities, including intentional initiatives both in and out of the hall in coordination with stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with appropriate University staff to support fraternity/sorority housing management and initiatives.
  • Develop and implement strategies and initiatives that support commuter student success and retention.
  • Supervise graduate and undergraduate staff to effectively carry out the business of Residence Life and Community Standards in a manner that best supports student success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

• Master’s degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree required.
• Priority given to candidates with master’s degree in related field and prior collegiate student life work experience.
• Experience with Residence Life and Community Standards desirable.
• Must have strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Requires active, energetic involvement in small college environment and a commitment to improving the quality of living and learning on a university campus.

Work Schedule:

This is an exempt, 40-hour per week; benefit eligible, 12-month position with evening and/or weekend work as needed.
